Chemical Peels

At West Houston Dermatology we offer chemical peels, a non-invasive procedure, which uses an acidic solution designed to exfoliate skin cells.  The chemical solution removes the damaged outer layers of skin, and the result is the reduced appearance of blemishes, acne scarring, and wrinkles.  This allows new, healthy skin to emerge and greatly stimulates the production of collagen.  Not all chemical peels are the same, and they vary by strength ranging from mild exfoliation to deep peels designed to repair acne scarring, wrinkles and sun damage.  At West Houston Dermatology we firmly believe that each patient is unique, so we will evaluate your skin type and condition to recommend a chemical peel that is right for you to avoid over-treating or under-treating your skin.  Though this is a non-invasive procedure, there is some downtime that depends on the strength of the chemical peel you undergo.  Usually, Retin A or Beta Lift peels cause peeling for 2-3 days, but a deeper peel, such as trichloracetic acid (TCA) can peel for up to one week.  During this time, it is important to keep your skin out of the sun, apply sun screen, and allow the peel to work on its own – that is, don’t help the peeling process along with picking.  Contact West Houston Dermatology today to set an appointment to discuss your options for a chemical peel or peel package that is right for you.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are procedures where different acidic solutions are applied to the skin in an attempt to promote exfoliation of older sun damaged cells and minor pigmentation changes in the skin. The process improves the superficial tone and texture of your skin as it stimulates the production of collagen and newer, healthier skin.

The strength of a chemical peel can vary, with peels ranging from very mild and exfoliating to deeper peels used for acne scarring or severe sun damaged wrinkles. After evaluating your skin and determining desired results, we will choose the peel deemed most suitable.

Conditions most appropriate for peels:

  • Melasma – brown spots on face from sun, pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Acne – with or without scarring Sun damaged skin/photoaging/wrinkles.
  • Photoaging (sun damage) with wrinkles

Milder peels (Beta Lift/Retin A) peels will cause peeling for 2-3 days, while deeper peels (TCA) can peel for up to 1 week. Milder peels can be repeated every 2-4 weeks, while stronger peels should be repeated at a 4-6 week interval. The number of peels required will depend upon the severity of your skin condition. Peel packages are available if additional peels are necessary.
