Collagen’s Importance in Skin Health and Appearance

We often hear the term collagen when talking about beauty in terms of skin, hair and nails.  This is because collagen is an incredibly important protein in the human body comprising about 30% of the body’s protein content.  When we are born and during our youth our bodies have an abundance of collagen that forms what dermatologists often refer to as a thigh mesh matrix.  This tight matrix is what prevents wrinkles from forming and makes the skin elastic.  Clinical research tells us that by the age of 21 people experience up to a 1% loss of collagen each year.  Though this does not sound all that significant, by the mid to late thirties, patients begin to notice that loss in their skin, hair and nails.  In women, the skin’s thickness can decrease by about 7% every ten years.  If that is not enough, in the first five years following menopause, women can lose up to 30% of the collagen found in their skin matrix.  In addition to wrinkles, collagen loss also affects the elasticity of the skin, and when we lose that, the skin sags.  West Houston Dermatology Laser & Skin Care Center is an excellent resource for taking action to combat collagen loss and even help regenerate collagen.  Such cosmetic dermatology treatments include Ulthera treatment, skin resurfacing, and even chemical peels.
