Dry Skin & Winter Itch in Houston

Dry Skin

Most of the time the average patient at West Houston Dermatology does not have a problem with dry skin (xerosis) because Houston is such a humid climate.  However, there are patients who have dry skin due to skin disorders like atopic dermatitis.  The wintertime seems to exacerbate dry skin for those who suffer with it and it can trigger dry skin for those who normally don’t have a problem.  Dry skin usually is a result of the lack of oil in the skin (sebum).  Sebum acts as a natural moisturizer to the skin.  Excessive bathing in hot water, aging, genetics, and certain soaps can also cause dry skin.  The good news is dry skin and winter itch are fairly easy to fix by applying moisturizer.  The best time to moisturize the skin is within two to three minutes after a shower or a bath when the skin is still damp.  Applying moisturizer to wet skin is not helpful.  Most of the time, Dr. Mahoney’s patients do well with products from drug stores such as Cetaphil or Eucerin, but in extreme cases, Dr. Mahoney may recommend a prescription product that contains urea or lactic acid.  Although it’s not officially wintertime yet, take some time to care for the skin all over your body and not just your face
