How Severe Is Your Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin disease that can affect almost any person, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic status.  The severity of psoriasis ranges from mild, moderate to severe.  Mild psoriasis affects only 1%-2% of the skin, moderate affects 3%-10% of the skin, and severe affects > 10%.  One method to gauge the severity of your psoriasis uses the palm of your hand.  The palm of your hand represents 1% of the skin’s surface area, so compare the affected areas of your skin with the palm of your hand.  If the affected areas roughly equate to 4 palms, then about 4% of your skin is affected, making your case of psoriasis moderate.  People with mild cases of psoriasis may find the disease to be a nuisance and be able to obtain relief from over-the-counter topical remedies, but you should see a board certified dermatologist for an examination and treatment if your psoriasis causes you discomfort or pain, makes it difficult to perform routine activities, causes you concern about the appearance of your skin, or if you experience swollen or painful joints.  There are several treatments available for psoriasis, but getting the right balance and combination requires a medical professional experienced in working with psoriasis patients, such as West Houston Dermatology. At West Houston Dermatology we treat psoriasis patients, but just as important, we’re truly concerned with the well-being of our patients.
