How the Holidays Can Make Rosacea Worse

Rosacea & Holiday Cheer

Though hard to believe, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah are just around the corner, and with holiday parties and photos, there is more pressure to look our best.  Dermatology patients with rosacea know that this skin condition does not have a cure, but that it can be controlled.  Stephen Mahoney, M.D. of West Houston Dermatology encourages rosacea patients to pay attention to their diet, the weather, and skin care always, but especially at this time of year.  Spicy foods, chocolate and red wine can trigger rosacea flare-ups, so be mindful of how many holiday goodies you’re consuming.  Stress can also trigger rosacea, so find that happy place – usually away from the grocery store, mall or family members who push your buttons.  When the weather gets cooler and dryer it’s important to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized. Drink plenty of water and use moisturizers without lots of fragrance and dyes to avoid skin irritation.  Finally, remember that many people are not aware that they have rosacea and assume the condition is acne or a skin allergy.
