Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that presents in transitory redness and bumpiness around the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead.  It is often mistaken for hypersensitive skin or adult acne, but if left untreated, rosacea can become worse.  Though medical experts are not certain what causes rosacea, it usually affects people who are fair skinned.  Triggers that can cause rosacea to flare-up can be sun exposure, wind exposure, extreme temperature swings, stress, spicy foods, hot weather, hot baths and alcohol consumption.   To properly diagnose rosacea requires evaluation by a board certified dermatologist.  There is no cure for rosacea, but it can be treated with topical ointments, oral medications, Retin-A or dermabrasion and laser surgery.   There are things you can do to help yourself and your dermatologist keep your rosacea under control, such as learning what triggers your outbreaks, using sunscreen on a consistent basis and being gentle with your skin.  It will help your dermatologist if you keep a diary of your rosacea flare-ups with what you ate, sun exposure, or what you were doing when your symptoms got worse.  The physicians at West Houston Dermatology have extensive experience in treating medical dermatology conditions such as rosacea.  If you have symptoms similar to those of rosacea, contact West Houston Dermatology for an appointment.
