What Is IPL?

IPL Treatment

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and this technology is used quite a bit in cosmetic dermatology treatments such as photoaging skin treatments, photorejuvenation, and hair removal.  IPL technology can assist in restoring the skin’s youthful appearance by removing age spots, benign brown pigmentation, reducing the redness associated with broken capillaries, treating leg veins, and scar revision.  Photorejuvenation usually includes treatment of the entire face or treatment of isolated areas on the hands or chest.  IPL works by transmitting a broad spectrum of light through a hand piece that is placed over the skin.   The hand piece contains filters so that the appropriate wavelengths can be optimized for a various applications and skin types.  During IPL treatment, light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the skin’s melanin.  The body’s natural elimination processes remove the injured tissue thereby making the skin tone appear more youthful.  Since IPL is a sub-epidermal treatment, there are few side effects and little to no patient downtime.  West Houston Dermatology Laser and Skin Care Center offers IPL treatments using Lumenis Aesthetic.  If you have questions about IPL treatment to treat cosmetic dermatological conditions, contact West Houston Dermatology Laser and Skin Care Center today.
